My Atkins Diet Story
aka how one Iowa guy lost over 200 pounds and gained his life back. I can not say enough about how positively the Atkins Diet and low carb in general has been for me. I went from a 429 pound guy who could barely make it up a flight steps to a guy running half marathons and rejoining the National Guard. My health is fantastic, and my blood work (cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, heart) could not be better.

@KB8LA – I studied biochemistry at University, and I’m afraid you are not correct with your statement that you need carbs to make energy/fat/muscle.
Protein is a MUST have nutrient, from which the body (liver) can synthesise glucose, which in turn can be converted to fat.
Fats are also necessary (even the ULTRA low fat diet regimes like Ornish know you need at least 15% of your calories from fat for normal body functions).
Carbs are OPTIONAL – but if you eat veg/fruits you get <100gm/day
@2tdixon You can either take their help one of two ways. Either just ignore it, and tell them to come back in 3 months when you are significantly lower in pounds, or tell them to read the book. Either way you will educate them and know where their heart is. They either want you to stay who you are with no knowledge to back it up or they are willing to at least have an educated opinion. You can do this!
So I just started my Atkins diet. I am currently 200lbs and I desperately want to loose 60 pounds to get reach my ideal weight. So far I have been discouraged by family members not to be eating eggs. I really need some help in getting these ponds off and regaining my life.
I hate being fat!!!!
@KB8LA Do you not grasp that I performed all those items WITHOUT more than 50g daily carbs in my diet? I tried to give you your say, but it is apparent that your brain is bottoming out due to blood glucose roller coaster. It is also quite apparent that the body can work and work well without the 200-300g of daily carbs that most Americans eat.
Due your inability to catch a clue and trolling, take care, but you can do it elsewhere….
@KB8LA It is apparent you didn’t read my message.
@bowulf
I rest my case. You need carbs for energy and maby those fancy stuff you are talking about is in those carbs. Point is your body needs carbs to make energy/fat/muscle.
@bowulf
Low carb breads are permitted, yes.
@KB8LA “Carbs create muscle and energie”
Wrong. Amino acids create muscles, and any macro-nutrient can creates energy or ATP molecules. You do realize I have run multiple full and half marathons on Atkins. I work in energy-requiring profession for prolonged periods of time and stress without food — firefighter. I do 40-50 mile bike rides, and my max weight lifted in bench, squat, and dead lift have increased since starting Atkins.
Does that sound like a guy without energy?
@KB8LA Not an exactly a “must eat” statement. It’s a statement that says if you can’t take the time to cook, you can try the convenience foods, but still follow the rules of Induction, which precludes most of them.
“normal bread isn’t.”
You can have normal whole grain bread on Atkins in the right phase. I am guessing you never left the first phase and hence never realized that.
@KB8LA Here is what Dr. Atkins says on special foods:
“some controlled carb food products can come in handy when you are unable to find appropriate food, can’t take time for a meal or need a quick snack. Just remember two things:
1. Not all convenience food products are the same, so check labels and carbohydrate content.
2. While any of these foods can make doing Atkins easier, don’t overdo it. Remember, you must always follow the Rules of Induction.
@bowulf
Well, why don’t you stick with sience then? because Carbs create muscle and energie. If you don’t eat them enough you loose muscle and energie.
The book says if you want to make it easier there are special dr atkins foods out there to buy and cook.
So you can have bread which is atkins approved. Because normal bread isn’t.
ur my motivation
@KB8LA Great, but when you make incorrect comments that “you need the special atkins food.” One wonders exactly what version of the diet you followed. Specify where in the book it says you need to buy special Atkins Food. What version of the diet did you follow? What were your menu’s and macronutrient ratios?
As for loss of muscle tissue, I stick with science as opposed to anecdotes:
Very-low-carbohydrate diets and preservation of muscle mass

@bowulf
I think I know what I’m talking about mate.
I followed the diet and those are my results. And a few months ago Dr Atkins was all over the news with the same comments from other people.
@KB8LA I am not sure what diet you did, but it wasn’t Atkins Diet as decribed in the book. Which version of the book did you read?
@KB8LA Sorry you are wrong,
“It is expensive because you need the special atkins food”
You don’t have to purchase any special food. Dr. Atkins recommends more than once buying whole natural foods.
“carbohydrate poor diet resulting in not only weightloss but also muscle loss.”
Umm poor as in restricted amounts, but the quality of carbs is high. No junk refined carbs here. As for muscle loss, this diet has been shown to be most PROTECTIVE of lean body mass in studies.
Dr Atkins really works.
It does however have some downsides. It is expensive because you need the special atkins food. It is a carbohydrate poor diet resulting in not only weightloss but also muscle loss.
I went from 124,6 kg to the lowest of 88,6 kg in 7 weeks time. But, I looked like a crack addict because my muscle was gone.
@itlk2angels Thank you!
@BryanMarcelLifestyle It definitely opened up new pathways that were previously shut or never even thought possible. My goal is to enable others to see what possible and perhaps a means for them to get there as well. It might not necessarily be for them rejoining the military, becoming a firefighter, or running marathons, but discovering their goal is definitely a great first step.
Congrats to the handsome guy who lost all the weight! I know you have to feel better physically & mentally. I always do when I lose.
I’m proud for you. You have a new lease on life.
-Bryan Marcel
@BorkGonsam Yep, if you are only going to stay on the diet for a few weeks, you are only causing yourself angst and needless case of Induction flu for temporary results. If you plan to follow the diet (“there is not after”), you will see the results you seek.
This diet has a bad reputation from people who dont go through with it, It fucks with the metabolism, and other health parts, but if u stay with a plan for along time after you lose ur weight It works.
@rmsolympic1 You can watch my exercise videos for a more complete answer, but the best answer besides my anecdotal testimony that it works for me and my weight lifting is that Olympic strength coach Charles Poliquin utilizes ketogenic diets with most of his athletes.
@herrera8769 No problem… I am glad it could help motivate you!
As a Newbie, I am always searching online for articles that can help me. Thank you
